Shepherding of the Uranian Rings. Ii. Dynamics

چکیده

We explore the dynamical significance of the orbital resonances, identified in Paper I (Porco and Goldreich 1987), involving the satellites 1986U7 and 1986U8, and the €, 8, and r rings. We demonstrate that these satellites are capable of exerting torques on the € ring which supply at the inner edge, and remove at the outer edge, the unperturbed angular-momentum luminosity transported by viscous stresses outward across the ring, provided that the ring has a mass which is comparable to the predicted value ME = 6.1 X 1018 g, and that it is not more than a few meters thick. Thus there is no compelling reason to question the applicability of the standard theory of shepherding to the € ring. However, the standard theory does place rather stringent requirements on the ring's properties, suggesting that confinement might be due to the reduction of the angular-momentum luminosity by flux reversal. Flux reversal could be associated either with the ring's eccentricity gradient or with nonlinear density waves in its interior. The drag due to the planet's extended neutral hydrogen atmosphere probably has only a minor effect on the dynamics of the €, 8, and r rings. However, it poses a severe problem for the shepherding of the a and P rings unless their masses have been seriously underestimated. This problem, and the large s-band optical depths of these rings, lead us to question the proposal that self-gravity is responsible for enforcing rigid precession in narrow rings.

Shepherding of the Uranian Rings. I. Kinematics

We identify several orbital resonances involving the newly discovered satellites, 1986U7 and 1986U8, and the Uranian rings. The most important resonances in eccentric rings are known as eccentric resonances and are generalizations of the more familiar Lindblad resonances. In keeping with the notation established for Lindblad resonances, we distinguish inner and outer eccentric resonances by the...

The Rings of Uranus: Shepherded, or Not?

I investigate the hypothesis that small, unseen moons are “shepherding” the main rings of Uranus. The ring edges are expected to be confined at the discrete locations of Lindblad resonances, where the moon’s influence produces a wavy edge. For a narrow, optically thick ring, this interaction manifests itself as a periodic variation in the ring’s brightness. Under many circumstances, the induced...

Three-Dimensional Dynamics of Narrow Planetary Rings

Narrow planetary rings are eccentric and inclined. Particles within a given ring must therefore share the same pericenter and node. We solve for the threedimensional geometries and mass distributions that enable the Uranian α and β rings, and the Saturnian Maxwell and Colombo (Titan) rings, to maintain simultaneous apsidal and nodal lock. Ring self-gravity, interparticle collisions, and the qua...

N-body Simulation of the Uranian Eccentric Rings

Introduction: One of the most striking features of the Uranian ring system is that some of rings, at least 6, 5, 4, , , -rings, are eccentric (e.g., reviewed by French et al. [1]). The existence of the eccentric rings is truly surprising, because it requires the pericenter of ring particles with different orbital periods to behave in exactly the same way under dispersive effects such as quadrap...

Near-Infrared Spectrophotometry of the Satellites and Rings of Uranus

New spectrophotometry from 1.5 to 2.5 /zm is reported for the Uranian satellites Titania, Oberon, and Umbriel. A spectrum of the rings of Uranus from 2.0 to 2.4/zm is also reported. No evidence is found for frost covering the surface of the ring material, consistent with the low albedo of the rings (P~ = 0.03) previously reported by Nicholson and Jones (1980). The surfaces of the satellites are...
